Being in a car accident can undoubtedly be a traumatic and unsettling situation. Nevertheless, it is important to keep a few suggestions in mind.

#1 Keep your wits about you and act sensibly. Make sure that you get all of the essential information from the other driver (his/her name, address, phone number and insurance information). It is also important that you telephone the police to have the department make a report of the accident so that there will be official documentation of the incident. It is suggested that you do not make any admissions or denials of liability to the officer.

#2 Your health and well-being are of paramount importance. So if you feel any pain or discomfort as a result of the accident, it is essential that you seek medical attention immediately.

#3 Contact your own insurance company as soon as possible to get a claim open for payment of your own injury bills and, if necessary, damage to your car.

#4 When treating for your accident-related injuries, be sure to provide your treating physician or therapist with your automobile insurance company’s identity and first-party benefits claim number. Do not provide your health insurance information unless you need additional treatment after the first-party benefits under your automobile policy have been depleted. If you use your health insurance policy, said policy will have a lien against your case.
